What makes a $1 scratch-off worth buying?

Three things matter. Overall odds are the printed chance any prize hits across the whole print run, and they never change. Prizes left change every day as winners claim them, so a game with strong odds can be picked clean of its top prizes. Are $1 scratch-offs better than cheaper tickets?

Pricier games often print better overall odds, and states often put a bigger share of the price into prizes. That doesn't make every one a good buy: once the big prizes are claimed, a pricier ticket can be a worse bet than a cheaper one.
